Resist consumerism
new challenge from the Smart Living Project

The holidays are coming up and we all brace for the spending that is about to happen to us between now and the new year. Take charge of your spending this holiday and reduce the amount of unnecessary STUFF you buy! Think about it this way: for every item you buy, raw materials are extracted then shipped all over the world, then energy and water are used to process those raw materials into a finished product that is again shipped all over the world. So much unnecessary stuff is consumed every year, especially during the holiday season. Free yourself from the stuff and focus on the “happy” in “happy holidays”.

November challenge

Go green by buying one less item next time you go to the store (any store). Simply do without, or replace one item in the grocery store with an organic or locally produced item instead.

Advanced challenge

Celebrate Buy Nothing Day! Participate by not participating. On November 28, North America celebrates Buy Nothing Day, and on November 29 the rest of the world celebrates it. What’s so special about this day? It’s the day after Thanksgiving, the biggest shopping day of the year.

Ecological Footprinting

The un-sustainability of consumerism becomes very apparent once you learn about the concept of ecological footprinting. Find out the size of your footprint and learn about the concept by visiting redefiningprogress.org.
