Food
Tofurkey is a little cliché, right? (But SLP’s resident vegetarians tell us the Quorn vegetarian roasts are a great substitute for the holiday bird). There are lots of great ways to go green when it comes to holiday food.
Go organic. Try to look for certified organic brands of your holiday favorites, cranberry sauce, potatoes and many other items are now available in organic varieties.
Go local. Scope out some of your local resources to see if anyone carries locally-raised meats, or locally produced veggie products.
Replace some of your meat dishes with vegetarian dishes. Pick one meat favorite and consider if some of your meat dishes wouldn’t really be just as good without the meat. Consider making turkey OR ham, that is, choose one meat favorite and really enjoy it.
Make do with less. Let’s admit it. We all get a little excited about holiday food and often make too much. Can you make do with a little less this year? Review your holiday menu before-hand with your family and ask each family member to pick their top two favorites. Stick to the menu and don’t make items your family won’t eat or can do without.
Donate to a local food pantry or volunteer at a local food shelter over the holidays. This is your community, and making it better is part of sustainability too. Maybe if you fill your soul with the spirit of the holiday season, filling your stomach becomes a lot easier, too.
